Post-quantum security in Prismara
Every Prismara product is built with post-quantum cryptography. This page explains what that means and why it matters, without the maths.
The problem: today’s encryption has an expiry date
Section titled “The problem: today’s encryption has an expiry date”Most of the internet is protected by public-key cryptography — the methods your browser uses to agree a secret key with a website, and to check that a message or update really came from who it claims to. These methods are secure against today’s computers.
A large enough quantum computer would be able to break the most widely used public-key methods. No such machine exists yet, but governments and standards bodies treat its arrival as a matter of when, not if.
Why it matters now: “harvest now, decrypt later”
Section titled “Why it matters now: “harvest now, decrypt later””An attacker doesn’t need a quantum computer today to cause harm later. They can capture encrypted data now and store it until they can decrypt it. Anything that must stay confidential for years — contracts, personal data, health or financial records, intellectual property, security incident details — is already at risk if it travels or is stored under encryption that a future quantum computer could break.
The answer: post-quantum cryptography
Section titled “The answer: post-quantum cryptography”Post-quantum cryptography uses mathematical methods that are designed to resist attacks from both today’s computers and future quantum computers. It runs on ordinary hardware — no quantum equipment is needed. In August 2024 the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published the first post-quantum standards, and governments in Europe and elsewhere are now asking organisations to plan their move to them.
What it means for you
Section titled “What it means for you”- Nothing to switch on. Post-quantum protection is built into Prismara. There are no settings to change and nothing extra to buy.
- Nothing changes for users. People sign in and work exactly as before.
- Keep apps and browsers up to date. Use a supported, current browser and the latest Prismara desktop apps and agents so your connections benefit from the newest protections. See System requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Section titled “Frequently asked questions”Do I need new hardware or software? No. Post-quantum cryptography runs on the computers, phones and browsers you already use. Keep them updated.
Is my data less protected today because quantum computers don’t exist yet? No. Post-quantum protection is about making sure data protected today stays protected in future, including data an attacker might have captured.
Can I see technical details of the cryptography used? We don’t publish implementation details on this public site. If your organisation needs them for a security or compliance review, contact support and we’ll arrange a briefing under the appropriate agreement.
